Jonathan Iliffe, Technical Director
Jonathan Iliffe is the Technical Director of SnakeGrid and is a Senior Lecturer at UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. Jonathan Iliffe's expertise lies in the area of geodesy, and specifically those issues that relate to coordinate reference systems national or local, on land or at sea. Current or very recent research projects include determining the height corrector surfaces for use in the British Isles (transforming GPS data to the local height system in each country), the UKHO-sponsored VORF project (transforming GPS data to the different coordinate reference systems used on land and at sea) and the development of the Snake projection (which gives near-unity scale factor along very large linear engineering projects such as railways).
In 2008 Jonathan Iliffe was awarded the Richard Carter Prize (Geospatial Engineer 2008) by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, for his work on the SnakeGrid and projects such as OSGM02 and VORF. He is the author of Datums and Map Projections for GIS, Remote Sensing and Surveying, which was first published in 1999.

SnakeGrid is likley to be offered as an additonal functionality on Trimble's Co-ordinate system management in Field and Office software solutions. SnakeGrid will eventually be offered as part of several surveying tools, softwares and field equipments.
SCS Computer, Ireland, has collaborated with SnakeGrid to create a solution based on a tablet PC using the existing version of SnakeGrid. Efforts are also on to develop solution for scenario where Rail companies are using slightly older Leica 1200 receivers with RX1250 controllers, as they could get the SnakeGrid functionality without having to purchase or change their survey hardware.
